Shuttle buses will carry participants and spectators from the Hampton Inn on Royal Street to the USS Alabama Battleship Park. Buses will start loading at 5 AM. Why shuttle participants to the start? 1. By ferrying participants to the Park for the start, they will have the freedom to leave Mobile when they want after the completion of their event though organizers would like folks to stick around for other 9-11 events happening in downtown. 2. Battleship Park will be open for business on Sunday and they will need parking spaces for visitors. The shuttles will carry folks from the Park to the finish after the 5K has cleared the Park. There will be limited shuttle service after the completion of the run from the Hampton Inn to the Park.
Why focus on a team competition instead of individuals? The first responders who went in to the Towers went as teams and we want to recognize the strength of the team. For the 5K team competition, a team needs to finish at least five people. When members register for the event, they need to fill in the name of their team and circle the team category - the number of members per team is not limited. An organization may have more than one team - for instance, the Bombers may run a coed team, a male team, and/or a female team.
Why the 7:30 AM start? Good question with several answers including, 1. Closing the tunnel for a run and getting police protection for the Causeway is not as easy as some might believe. 2. There are a lot of downtown and midtown churches having services and their members do not appreciate any disturbance of their Sunday morning routines.
