With all the terrible crime that is consistent in Mobile, I hope the Crime Prevention 5K will help..... Mobile, Alabama is a terrible place to live. This is the truth. Be careful as you run through downtown Mobile. Good Luck!!!

Former road race participant

The “Sixteenth Annual Crime Prevention Run” is just a few weeks away!!!!

It would be great to draw more than 500 runners for the first time ever!

CRIME in MOBILE, ALABAMA is a serious problem!!!

The Crime Prevention Run has become one of Mobile’s finest races with plenty of hospitality and prizes from local sponsors. The primary purpose is for us runners is to show people that we can and will do what we are capable to fight crime in our City. Sheriff Sam Cochran has always supported this running event and the running community because we can make a difference in the troublesome society of people that have nothing better to do but create havoc throughout our town. Running sends a positive message to all that are in need of something while being lost and looking.

The Crime Run 5K is always fun and happy. It attracts a big crowd of spectators and fast runners always show up to plow the hot and humid course. Matthew Dobson, running coach at West Florida University, ran away with the race four years in a row (2001-2004) with some blazing times in the 15:40ish range. Former Olympian and Auburn All-American John Tuttle showed up in 1998 to set the course record with a rapid time of 15:06. Former St. Paul’s, Mississippi State and Belmont running star John Brigham won the race in 2007 and 2008 while local runners Warren Helmer, Wyman Hamilton and Chris Schmidt have really burned up the course and former Mobilian professional racewalker Dave McGovern walked the course in an incredible 21:37 in 2000. Dave Jeffrey has the and 60’s age group record and DJ just keeps running on. Leonard Vergunst of Ocean Springs broke Dave’s 50-over record with a 17:41 in 2008. Six-time Alabama High School x-country state champ, female winner of the first ATR, and Master runner, Lisa Savell Drew set the female course record in 2002 with an 18:24 and won again in 2003 with an 18:49. Jean Lankford ran an 18:45 at her young age of 42 in 2000. Other local females that have recorded fast times are Amy Huff, Lolly York, Athena Lopez, Susan Swartz-Morgan and Dawn Manche. Monetta Roberts set the female racewalker record in 2003 with a 27:53.

The record number of participants in this race is 490 in 2007.

CONTENTMENT is not the fulfillment of what you want but the realization of how much you already have…….
