By beginning, do you mean a newbie runner? She might want to consider Team in Training. I don't know if they are doing a NYC marathon, but it is a good place to start some training, especially for a newbie. They typically train mostly in MObile, but go to the Eastern Shore about every third weekend. www.teamintraining.org
