The only injury I've ever sustained during marathon training was from making too big of a jump in mileage at one time. I have done track work getting ready for all 4 marathons that I've done. While I do believe longer tempo runs where the focus is more on sustaining a threshold pace, there is something to be said for running longer intervals (i.e. 4-6 x 1200m-2000m) on a weekly basis. I also like to incorporate some 200m or 400m repeats into my training a least once a month to make sure my legs remember what it feels like to run fast. In my opinion, the biggest thing to remember is to listen to your body. If you feel an injury coming on or you're just plain tired (and believe me you will be) it is important to take some time off or at least take a few easy days.
