Well, first, what Mike said is what I was going to say.
That shows that he is:
a) incredibly perceptive
b) naturally brilliant
c) funny as hell
d) foolish, for wading in (pun intended) on Tim's water theory.
I think it (proximity to water) has to do with appreciating a certain life style, an appreciation of nature, and the availability of cheap land. We had that before we met, and we stay together because we share more than a love of running. And that dear forum readers, is the closest you'll ever get me to being sentimental about this rag-tag band of misfits.
I too live on an island, Hollinger's, as does Tim and Rhonda. But sadly Leif, there is no where to swim around here.
I have thought about swimming at my beach, but I haven't found anyone who will swim with me, and I am not one to swim alone...easy pickin's that way. The sand is just as thick/squichy as Fairhope, and we are just about right across from it. And, we are upstream of the Theodore ship canal, so the yucky stuff (thanks Mike) flows AWAY from me.
We do have alligators show up occasionally, but they hardly ever attack in day light.
Think about it.
