The halfer, to a novice like me, is a "fun" distance. It's quite a challenge but not as draining as the full marathon. Follow Higdon's plan -- it works fine -- and take it easy. Have fun. Figure out on long runs what you need in terms of water, sports drink and gel (or whatever). Think through blisters, chafing, etc. -- particularly because of the cold. And break the race down into your favorite 3-, 4- or 5-mile (or whatever) runs and imagine you're doing those runs all in one fell swoop.
Just my thoughts ... The Rev. Kerry Rehm will gladly attest to the fact that I ain't no expert, just the Fastest Presbyterian Minister in Leakesville (in which there are two Presbyterian ministers).
